The Ragdoll breed began in the early 1960s in California, developed by breeder Ann Baker. The foundation cat behind the breed was a white, long haired female named Josephine, whose offspring displayed unusually gentle temperaments, relaxed handling responses, and striking blue eyes when paired with colorpointed males.

Through selective breeding, Baker focused on preserving three defining traits: a calm, people oriented temperament, large semi longhaired bodies, and the distinctive blue eyed colorpoint pattern. Early outcrosses included cats with Siamese type markings and long haired domestic cats, which contributed to the breed’s structure, coat, and coloration.

As the breed gained attention, Ragdolls became known for their tendency to relax completely when held... a trait that inspired the breed’s name. Over time, dedicated breeders refined the Ragdoll into the consistent, well-defined breed recognized today by major cat registries.

Ragdolls were later accepted into associations such as CFA and TICA, where strict breed standards were established to preserve their defining characteristics: blue eyes only, pointed pattern, large soft bodied structure, and a gentle, affectionate temperament. Today’s Ragdolls are the result of decades of selective breeding focused on health, temperament, and adherence to those standards.

Ragdolls are famous for their calm, affectionate nature and their love of human companionship. They tend to follow their people from room to room, settle nearby while you work or relax, and gently “check in” rather than demand constant attention... a trait longtime Ragdoll lovers know well.
